Jigawa State is a state in central northern Nigeria. Its capital is Dutse.
Location
Jigawa State is one of thirty-six States that constitute Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is situated in north-western part of the country between Latitudes 11.00oN to 13.00oN and Longitudes 8.00oE to 10.15oE. Kano and Katsina States border Jigawa to the west, Bauchi State to the east and Yobe State to the northeast. To the north, Jigawa shares an international border with Republic of Niger, which is a unique opportunity for cross-border trading activities. Government readily took advantage of this by initiating and establishing a Free-Trade Zone at the Border town of Maigatari.
History
Jigawa State was carved out of Kano State on 27th August, 1991.
Agriculture
The people of the state are mainly farmers. Food crops produced include maize, millet and guinea corn, cash crops like cotton and groundnut are also produced.
Livestock is also an important aspect of the economy of the state. Large numbers of cattle are reared in the state.
There are so many industrial enterprises in the state and these industries operate mostly with raw materials produced locally. These are in form of agriculture and livestock.
Mineral Resources
Jigawa State is blessed with mineral resources: they are kaolin, tourmaline, amethyst, marl stones, potash, solice, iron ore, copper, gold, white quartz, refractory clay and antimony.
Education
The state gives priority attention to education of its people. There are numerous primary and post-primary institutions as well as technical and teacher's colleges in the state. The state could be reached either by road or rail.
