Adamawa is a state in northeastern Nigeria, with its capital at Yola. It was formed in 1991 from part of Gongola State with four administrative divisions namely: Adamawa, Ganye, Mubi and Numan. It is one of the thirty-six (36) States which constitute the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Location

The state is essentially a picturesque mountainous land traversed by big river valleys of Benue, Gongola and Yedsarem. The valleys of Cameroon, Mandara and Adamawa mountains form part of this undulating landscape

History

Adamawa was created out of Gongola State on 27th August, 1991 as one of the nine new states created by the Federal Military Government.

Agriculture

Crops such as maize, rice, millet, sugar cane, cotton, groundnuts, arabica, guinea corn, tea and kola nuts are all successfully grown in the state.

Mineral Resources

There are abundant deposits of mineral ore in the state such as iron, lead, zinc, limestone, etc.

Education

There are several secondary and primary schools, technical Colleges and private institutions. The state also has a Nursing and Midwifery School, two Vocational Training schools and a College of Legal Studies in the capital. Health and Medical Services have reached a relatively advanced stage of development

Tourism

Adamawa State is well noted for a rich cultural heritage which is reflected in its past history, craftmanship, music and dances, dress patterns and hospitality.

Festivals such as the Njuwa Fishing Festival which holds at Lake Njuwa in Yola town and the Yinagu fishing festival at Michika attract people within and outside the state from the month of March through May each year.

Other tourist attractions in the state are Koma hills, three sister rocks (Song Local Government) and Kiri Dam near Guyuk.

People

The people of Adamawa, are noted for its rich cultural heritage which reflects in its history, i.e. dances, dress patterns, craftsmanship, music, and her cordial relationships. The three main religions are Islam, Christianity and Traditionalism.
